Facilitated by Beth Mount, 2001 Complementing a project sponsored by the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities

Button | | The Everyday Heroes quilt was designed to express twelve essential elements of the work of direct support professionals that facilitates community membership in the lives of people with disabilities. The hands around the border of the quilt represent the mark on the world made by each Hero through their individual and united efforts to support better lives for people. The center heart resembles a Milagro, a traditional symbol of healing and protection found throughout the world, particularly in Latin American countries.
The hand in this heart sparks a flame of creativity. When the work of direct support workers is valued and respected, then the work of nurturing empowerment is a form of creative social justice that changes the world. The Everyday Heroes quilt "travels" with the presenter of the material to support the memory of the themes and to frame the stories told about the inclusion of people with disabilities in everyday life. |
